Introduction This document describes how to install version 6.1.0.2 of the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (2145) software. This release of software is a new release and delivers new features in addition to resolving APARs as detailed in Section 5. Please refer to the Recommended Software List and Supported Hardware List on the support website: http://www.ibm.com/storage/support/2145 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Available Education A course on SAN Volume Controller Planning and Implementation is available. For further information or enrolment, contact your local IBM representative. Visit the support website for online learning materials and tutorials, IBM Redbooks and training information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Pre-Requisites SVC Cluster Upgrade Information Before installing this code level please check the following pre-requisites are met. Also please note the concurrent upgrade (upgrade with I/O running) restrictions. Performance of the cluster will be degraded during the software upgrade process because nodes are taken offline to perform the upgrade and the write cache is flushed when each node is restarted. IBM recommends you perform the upgrade at a time of lower overall I/O activity and when you do not expect significant spikes in the system workload. If you are performing a concurrent code upgrade, you must first ensure that all host paths are available and operating correctly. Check there are no unfixed errors in the error log or on the front panel. Use normal service procedures to resolve these errors before proceeding. Before upgrading the SVC cluster, we recommend using the SVC Software Upgrade test utility "upgradetest". Refer to the following URL for further information: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S4000585 SVC 6.1.0.x uses a new GUI, accessed by a web browser launched directly at the cluster IP address. The SVC Console code is therefore no longer used and can be uninstalled after the cluster has been upgraded. The following URL contains a utility to uninstall the existing SVC Console (GUI) and create desktop shortcuts to the new Management GUI: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S4000918 For existing clusters, please check which level your cluster is currently running before proceeding. Refer to the Software Installation and Configuration Guide for instructions on how to determine this. If you are running a version of SVC software older than 5.1.0.6 then you will have to perform multiple upgrades to install SVC 6.1.0.2 on your cluster. Please see the following web page for the full upgrade compatibility matrix. http://www.ibm.com/storage/support/software/sanvc/code ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Code Levels 2145 Software: 2145 Release Level 6.1.0.2 (25.1.1011240000) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Problems Resolved and New Features New features in SVC 6.1.0.1: * New Management GUI - Improved usability - No requirement for separate console installation - Direct cluster access via web browser * Easy Tier hotspot management * Support for long object names - maximum character limit increased from 15 to 63 * New maximum managed disk size - 256TB when presented from IBM Storwize V7000 * Storage controller World Wide Node Name (WWNN) limit increased from 64 to 1024 * Dynamic cache destage track size, within the range of 32K - 256K * Multi-session support for iSCSI-attached hosts * Persistent reserve support for iSCSI-attached hosts * Support for SCSI WriteSame New service features in SVC 6.1.0.1 * Service Assistant - Ability to perform service actions and data collection via Ethernet connection to individual nodes APARs resolved in this release (6.1.0.2): Critical Fixes IC72825 Loss of access/data error on thin provisioned volumes with used capacity greater than 2TB APARs resolved in previous 6.1.x releases: 6.1.0.1 Critical Fixes IC67469 Multiple node asserts caused by multiple thin provisioned volume shrink commands while a volume is undergoing an autoexpand operation IC68600 Multiple node asserts following node replacement during cluster upgrade procedure IC68873 Multiple node asserts following sequential image mode volume migrations IC68891 231 boot errors on CF8 nodes IC69039 Multiple node asserts when more than 512 candidate WWPNs visible to cluster nodes High Importance Fixes IC65295 Node assert caused by quorum disk interaction issue IC65766 Node asserts caused by host logouts IC66869 Degraded Global Mirror performance caused by internal resource allocation issue IC67292 Node assert when entered password exceeds maximum password character length IC67362 Node asserts during thin provisioned volume auto-expand operation IC67786 Node asserts when flash copy target volumes have reached full capacity IC69056 Node assert caused by combination of abnormal storage controller behaviour and slow fibre channel fabric IC69947 Node assert when mdisk group is taken offline Suggested Fixes IC68431 Master volume name in remote copy relationship blank when viewed from auxiliary cluster IC69644 Node assert when node becomes the cluster config node IC69688 Node assert when a node rejoins a cluster, while I/O is being performed to space efficient volumes IC70022 I/O queue depth change for XIV storage controllers ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Further Documentation The latest version of all SAN Volume Controller documentation can be downloaded in PDF format from the support website: http://www.ibm.com/storage/support/2145 A number of terminology changes have been introduced in the 6.1.0.x release. Please refer to the following URL for more details: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/svc/ic/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm. storage.svc.console.doc/svc_whatsnewinsvcic_22iihc.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Known Issues and Restrictions in this Level SAN Volume Controller 2145-CF8 Node Solid-State Drives Must be Unmanaged Before Upgrading to V6.1.0.x Refer to the following flash for more information on this restriction: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S1003688 SAN Volume Controller and Storwize V7000 Intra-Cluster Global Mirror Not Supported With V6.1.0.x Code Refer to the following flash for more information on this restriction: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S1003725 Disk Space Low Warning When Upgrading From SAN Volume Controller V5.1.0.x to V6.1.0.x Refer to the following flash for more information on this restriction: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S1003723 Metro/Global mirror relationships are not supported when the partner cluster is running 4.3.0.x code: Refer to the following flash for more information on this restriction: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S1003646 iSCSI host ports are incorrectly listed as offline, with zero logins to SVC nodes. Refer to the following Technote for more information on this issue: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S1003599 Use of a standards-compliant browser, such as Firefox, is recommended for using the Storwize V7000 Management GUI. Use of Internet Explorer is supported but may result in slower performance of the GUI. If using Firefox to access the 5.1.0 SVC Console (GUI) to perform a cluster code upgrade from 5.1.0.x to 6.1.0.x, please ensure that third-party cookies are enabled. This can be achieved via the following steps in Firefox: 1) Tools > Options 2) Click the Privacy tab 3) Make sure that both the "Accept cookies from sites" and the "Accept third-party cookies" checkboxes are checked. Please read the following flashes before upgrading: Potential Loss of Access and Data Error When Performing I/O to Thin Provisioned (Space Efficient) Volumes (VDisks) With Used Capacity Greater Than 2TB http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S1003734 If an SVC Code Upgrade Stalls or Fails then Contact IBM Support for Further Assistance http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ssg1S1002894 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8.
