Error Description ================= APARs IY46366 (AIX 5.1) and IY45289 (AIX 5.2) introduce a new mode of operation in EtherChannel, called "hash_mode", where the outgoing traffic can be distributed among the EtherChannel adapters based on each packet's destination IP or source or destination TCP or UDP port. An error was introduced by this code that affects some customers who are using EtherChannel. Basically, when the IP header of the packet being sent is split between mbufs (i.e. it is not contained within the first mbuf), a page fault may occur when sending packets out of the EtherChannel. Although this does not typically happen, if it does it may cause the machine to crash. This will affect customers that are doing IP forwarding and sending packets through an EtherChannel device, but it may also affect other customers using EtherChannel. If you are using an EtherChannel device but unsure whether this might affect you or not, it is best that you either do not apply this fix or apply it and immediately install the corresponding eFix over it before attempting to use an EtherChannel. The code in this fix will not affect customers who are not using an EtherChannel device, so if you are not you may install it without problems. Affected Levels =============== This problem exists in the following AIX levels: AIX 5.1: devices.common.IBM.ethernet.rte 5.1.0.52 through 5.1.0.54 AIX 5.2: devices.common.IBM.ethernet.rte 5.2.0.13 Installing the Patch ==================== If your system has an affected level installed, you can install the patch using one of the following commands: AIX 5.1: emgr -e IY48331.51.epkg.Z AIX 5.2: emgr -e IY48170.52.epkg.Z You will need to restart your system for the patch to take effect. The final final fix will be delivered in APARs IY48331 (AIX 5.1) and IY48170 (AIX 5.2). When available, the APARs can be downloaded from the IBM pSeries Fix Delivery Center at the following URL: https://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/aix.fdc
